PRIMEFLEX® vShape® 5.2: Challenging the Big Players

Designed as 'blueprints' for virtualization and private or hybrid cloud projects, PRIMEFLEX® vShape® solutions aim to simplify the implementation of truly modern IT infrastructures in companies of all industries and sizes. With support for vSphere 6.0, improved scalability, and a new backup option, version 5.2 offers even more flexibility than its predecessors.

Effective organizations take a holistic approach to building IT environments. Whether they deal with traditional, on-premises data centers, virtualization or the cloud – their key objectives are always the same throughout: performance, data availability and security. The problem is that even under regular conditions these goals are often hard to achieve, and following a holistic approach means they have to invest considerable time and effort. As a consequence, costs may easily exceed stipulated budget limits, a situation that seemingly corroborates the old tale of IT being 'nothing but a cost driver.' That is why some three years ago, we developed PRIMEFLEX® vShape® as a reference architecture that helps customers tackle infrastructure, namely virtualization and consolidation projects with more ease than before – and without running into classic pitfalls such as lack of manpower or experience, narrow timeframes, or ballooning expenses. To achieve this, the PRIMEFLEX® vShape® builds on highly scalable industry-standard components including storage, networking and virtualization software, all running on Fujitsu's PRIMERGY servers and validated as a single solution. At the time, the concept of an integrated, all-inclusive, best-of-breed hard- and software package for virtualization novices stopped short of being revolutionary.

Fast forward to 2015, and we see that with hundreds of successful implementations worldwide, PRIMEFLEX® vShape® has gained a sizable share of the virtualization market. We think this is the main reason why Fujitsu has been positioned from a niche player to a challenger in Gartner's 2015 Magic Quadrant1 for Integrated Systems. But it still leaves room for improvement, and that is what the latest version aims for.

New Features
As you would expect, PRIMEFLEX® vShape® 5.2 has all the qualities of its predecessors. First and foremost, this means it supports a broad set of use cases and business scenarios from server and desktop virtualization through supporting business intelligence and BYOD to full-fledged Private and Hybrid Cloud Projects. To further enhance these capabilities, our developers added a number of new features and functionalities:

  • PRIMEFLEX® vShape® 5.2 is the first version that fully supports vSphere 6.0, the latest edition of VMware's market-leading virtualization platform for servers and applications, which itself comes equipped with a truckload of innovative features, among them long-distance live migration, instant cloning of virtual machines (VMs) and container instances, and support for SAP HANA and Hadoop.
  • Clients looking to implement a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) can now choose between two tested software platforms that will grant end users access to their applications, virtual workspaces and online services: VMware Horizon® and Citrix® XenDesktop®. The vShape reference architecture for VDI integrates all of the hardware and middleware components in one solution; it has been tested and validated for 250 and 500 users, and offers high flexibility and scalability along with easy management.
  • PRIMEFLEX® vShape® reference architectures for server virtualization enable businesses to make more efficient use of existing hardware assets – essentially, to decrease the number of servers in their data centers while still offering the same or better levels of performance, application and data availability, and stability/reliability. As a result, they will be able to substantially reduce hardware investments as well as operational costs and efforts. Version 5.2 offers higher scalability than ever before, supporting up to 2,400 VMs on several servers and unlocking the potential of vShape for large-scale, enterprise-grade implementations.
  • Finally, PRIMEFLEX® v Shape® 5.2 comes with a newly-validated backup concept based on the FUJITSU Storage ETERNUS CS200c S2 Integrated Backup Appliance. The appliance combines correctly sized hardware with storage capacities ranging from 1 to 132 TB with backup software and licenses from Commvault into a complete backup solution for the fast and uncomplicated setup of a comprehensive backup environment. Unlike competing systems, the ETERNUS CS200c offers functions like backup and recovery, archiving, replication and dedup-to-disk right out of the box and also includes options for snapshots/snapshot replication, tape and cloud storage and long-term retention. Other vendors often insist that customers purchase additional hard- and software and charge for every 'extra' that might be activated along the way – with the FUJITSU ETERNUS CS200c, all required components are included in a single purchase price, while built-in deduplication and variable licensing ensure it's adaptable to a broad set of individual business needs.

With its comprehensive feature set, improved functionalities and attractive pricing, PRIMEFLEX® vShape® 5.2 is ready to compete with virtualization and cloud computing platforms from market leaders such as Cisco and Dell/EMC. The solution is available globally from Fujitsu and certified channel partners. Prices vary by region and configuration.
