Platform for Business-Critical Services: FUJITSU Server PRIMERGY RX4770 M2

Roughly a decade after Amazon, Google and others introduced cloud computing, the IT world faces a new sea change yet again. This time, the concept of a new industrial revolution – hailed enthusiastically as Industry 4.0 – is driving major transformations in data centers, with unrelenting demands for higher server performance and extended system capabilities to suit new network infrastructures and ever-evolving usage patterns. The new FUJITSU Server PRIMERGY RX4770 M2 is one of two new systems designed to meet these demands.

According to market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), four so-called megatrends are currently driving IT spending and will continue to do so over the medium term: cloud computing, Big Data & Analytics, mobility, and social business. While none of them is particularly new, their 'combined assault' still poses a dramatic challenge to many IT departments and data centers that continue to work within the boundaries of classic infrastructure concepts, most notably the "dedicated systems for defined services" approach. Quite frankly, the biggest problem with this approach is that it almost always results in IT processes being shaped after technology demands when instead they should be shaped according to business processes. Fujitsu has addressed the issue early on with the introduction of business-centric compute and storage platforms and matching solutions for data and application management. As may be easily imagined, these solutions call for regular improvements regarding server performance and capabilities – which is why we are releasing the second-generation PRIMERGY RX4770 barely a year after the first edition.

Specifications
Consequently, the RX4770 M2 expands on the concept and capabilities of its predecessor. Designed to run business-critical and data-intensive backend services such as transaction processing and OLAP, the new quad-socket system gets a major performance boost from upgrades to two core components:

  • It builds on the latest Intel® Xeon® E7 v3 processor family1 released on May 5, more specifically its E7-4800 and E7-8800 variants. Equipped with up to 18 cores and 45 MB of LLC, these processors run at speeds ranging from 1.9 GHz in standard to 3.3 GHz in turbo mode and deliver up to 9.6 GT/s (billion data transfers per second). In essence, they offer 20% higher core counts, up to 20% more cache, and 20% better transfer rates. As a result, the RX4770 M2 now includes 72 cores (instead of 60) within its maximum configuration, and performance increases by nearly one fifth.
  • Likewise, the DDR3 memory bars of the first edition have been replaced with much faster DDR4 modules operating at a bus speed of 2,133 MHz, which can be fitted into 96 memory slots distributed across 8 configurable memory boards. Memory capacities start at 16 GB and currently max out at 3 TB; an expansion to 6 TB is expected as soon as 64 GB memory modules become available later this year.

Needless to say, the PRIMERGY RX4770 M2 retains some of the key improvements that came with the first generation, including innovations such as high-speed networking with onboard dual-channel 10Gbit/s Ethernet controllers and PCIe slots, support for business-critical RAS features like Enhanced Machine Check Architecture, live error correction and automatic recovery that foster system resiliency, and extensive server monitoring and remote management thanks to our last-generation integrated Remote Management Controller (iRMC S4), which enables thorough checkups regardless of system status. The same goes for internal storage capabilities: the PRIMERGY RX4770 M2 supports 6 Gbit/s and 12 Gbit/s SAS HDDs as well as 6 Gbit/s SATA and 12 Gbit/s SAS SSDs; moreover, support for up to 4 PCIe SSDs will be added at a later date. Maximum storage capacities amount to 9.6 and 14.4 TB with SAS HDDs, 6.4 TB with SATA SSDs, and 12.8 TB with SAS SSDs; PCIe SSDs will come in three sizes holding 800 GB, 1.6 TB and 2 TB of data, respectively.

The PRIMERGY RX4770 M2 supports all major server operating systems, including Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2, Red Hat® Enterprise Linux 6 and 7, SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server 11 and 12, and Oracle® Linux 6 and 7. While this is pretty much true for all PRIMERGY family members, the second-gen RX4770 stands out from the crowd because it was designed to become the hardware platform of choice for virtualization software from VMware (vSphere™ 5.5), Citrix (XenServer®), and again Oracle (VM3). Like every other family member, the new PRIMERGY series flagship is equipped with our exhaustive ServerView® management suite that covers all aspects of server operation from deployment to system integration and encompasses a wide variety of automation options.

Conclusion
With its substantial hardware improvements and comprehensive feature set, the FUJITSU Server PRIMERGY RX4770 M2 is set to become a solid basis for business-critical services and particularly demanding use cases. As outlined above, these include transactional as well as analytical applications such as Business Intelligence workloads or backend and in-memory databases. In fact, the PRIMERGY RX4770 M2 handles this latter software type particularly well, as is demonstrated by the fact that it has been awarded the coveted "Certified for SAP HANA®" label right from the start. Moreover, the system is ideally suited to help IT departments meet constant demands for operational efficiency and cost cuts. That's because thanks to the powerful hardware, they only need 4 of the new models to handle the same workloads as 10 existing, 5-year-old quad-socket servers – thus reducing hardware investments as well as operational expenses, the latter by up to 48%. Also, the PRIMERGY RX4770 M2 enables data centers to address 'classic' challenges like underutilization and server sprawl with extensive consolidation projects: given its typical 2:1 consolidation ratio, they can nearly halve expenditures for management, maintenance, and power/cooling compared to quad-socket servers with a typical working period. In other words, the combination of more processing power, faster access to critical data in memory and on disk, and greater ease of handling supports CIOs and their staff in securing business-critical functions and building smooth, efficient IT processes – exactly what companies are looking for.

It would be particularly nice to have a brief description of one or two solutions based on your hardware. Could you recommend a case study? Just "mission critical" hardware does not help too much.
