Time Flies – Don’t Forget to Migrate to Windows Server 2012 R2

The day of support ending for Windows Server 2003 is getting closer and closer. That's why everybody should be aware of the risks and what you can do to stay ahead with the IT challenges of the 21st century.

Once support is discontinued after July 14 this year, your customers will no longer receive critical support, automatic fixes, security updates or technical assistance. As this has a significant impact on functionality and stability of a company's IT infrastructure, this end-of-support should not be ignored: in a worst-case scenario, the entire business will be at risk, and consequences cannot be overestimated. But customers need not be afraid. Fujitsu and its channel partners have started an initiative to assist them in transferring data from the old platform(s) to Windows Server 2012 R2 and new servers from the PRIMERGY family. The process is easy and enables companies to take advantage of numerous technical advancements and improvements delivered with Windows Server over the past ten years.

Companies looking for a simple, hassle-free and inexpensive transition method can now call on Fujitsu and our extended network of SELECT Experts for assistance: we will help them find the right solution(s) for their business – from assessing their systems' current capabilities and future requirements right through to delivering and implementing appropriate hardware, complete with the adequate edition of Windows Server 2012 R2 and the Fujitsu ServerView® Management Suite pre-installed. Moreover, Fujitsu's Business Application Services Group has set up a process that helps companies migrate crucial Line of Business Applications (LOB) without any business disruption or security issues. Once finished, customers will benefit from increased performance and efficiency, easy handling and maintenance, and substantial cost cuts – and be able to concentrate on their core business.

What Channel Partners Should Do
Fujitsu Channel partners and SELECT Experts may want to follow these recommended next steps:

  • Reach out to your customers: inform them of the pending end of support (EOS) for Windows Server 2003. In doing so, reiterate the risks of running an unsupported IT infrastructure, highlight the benefits of Windows Server 2012 R2 on a modern server, and suggest and execute a proper migration strategy.
  • Underscore the benefits of modern OS technology: more powerful servers for improved processing and throughput, greater efficiency, reduced server footprint, simplified management, and full support – all combined within pre-installed systems that allow for a simple, effective transition.
  • Start now: Migration takes time – therefore it's best to kick off the process ASAP and catalog software and workloads; evaluate applications and workloads by type, criticality, complexity, and risk; identify target destinations; and finally, move data and applications from A to B.
