JetBrains Introduces New IDE for .NET Developers [UPDATE]

Czech software outfit JetBrains, provider of popular tools like IntelliJ IDEA and CLion, has launched a public early access preview (EAP) of "Rider," a cross-platform development tool based on the company's own IntelliJ and ReSharper technologies.

According to the company's detailed feature list, Rider supports a comprehensive (one might even say all-encompassing) approach to creating, debugging and editing .NET-oriented desktop and web applications as well as libraries and services; however, so far this doesn't include UWP and mobile apps. Likewise, it's possible to write code for .NET Core and Mono projects. Despite being in early development state, Rider already supports a broad set of languages and data formats that are popular within the .NET developer community, including C#, VB.NET, ASP.NET, HTML, JavaScript, SQL, and JSON; support for various stylesheet languages will be added at a later date.

The Rider UI is practically identical with that of IntelliJ IDEA, as are several important features, most notably support for version control systems and databases. Other capabilities were borrowed from ReSharper, JetBrains' "Visual Studio Extension for .NET Developers"; these include navigation and search, refactoring, code inspections, and quick-fixes, among others. Furthermore, the presentation also suggests that Rider is a genuine 64-bit IDE ("not jammed into a 32-bit process"), which is expected to substantially reduce latencies when opening or reopening projects as well as to help the tool stay responsive even when it's in deep code analysis/debug mode.

As an EAP, Rider may be downloaded from the JetBrains website free of charge. A price for the commercial version was not yet disclosed; however, JetBrains customers expect it to be in the same range as the cost of IntelliJ IDEA.

[Update 12-20-16: Meanwhile, build 15 of the Rider EAP has been released; this version fixes several bugs and issues of the November build, includes database editor and version control improvements, and allows for faster and more accurate debugging.]
