When Tolkien's "Fellowship of the Ring" disbanded, its members set off towards the Grey Havens to board a ship that would take them way out west, to the so-called Blessed Realm where they would live on forever unforgotten. After fighting declining public and exhibitor interest with a string of ever-changing concepts for most of the past decade, Europe's big ICT expo – once a more-than-solid contender for Las Vegas's CES and Taipei's Computex – may not be remembered quite as fondly. Still, now that its operator Deutsche Messe AG has called off future shows at the Hanover fairground, many on the Old Continent may sense a faint glimmer of nostalgia.

It's no secret that, historically speaking, the 'war' between proprietary and open source software has not only cost both factions are fortune, but was also instrumental in creating a whole mountain range of missed opportunities. Against this backdrop, it's always heartening to see the two camps come to terms and cooperate, as in this latest project, which was announced yesterday at the Red Hat Summit 2018 in San Francisco.

In the world of software development, a healthy dose of competition is usually considered the norm. Then again, too much rivalry sometimes turns out to be destructive, for example when it hurts the interoperability of related, yet distinct software products. That's particularly annoying if the two are essentially easily compatible – like Docker and Kubernetes, which are used for containerization and automated deployment and management, respectively.

The developer team overseeing Samba – the free SMB/CIFS re-implementation used to allow file and print sharing between Windows- and Unix-based computers – has issued a grave security warning plus patches: It appears that from version 4.0.0 onwards, any authenticated users who is brazen enough can reset the passwords of every other user – including those of network administrators and maintenance staff.

Eight years have passed since the once highly controversial Sun-Oracle merger was completed, Meanwhile, many issues that were initially seen as potential reasons for conflict between two distinct corporate cultures have been solved in one way or the other. Still some problems have shown a tendency to linger on – for instance, the question who exerts control over the Java brand and how far said control goes. At this point in time the answer is clear: Oracle – and they can even make open source projects change their name.

High Performance Data Analytics, or HPDA, currently ranks high among the hottest topics discussed by members of the ICT industry and their customers. First introduced in 2013, the concept involves a mix of hard- and software components that enables companies to process and dissect whatever Big Data sets they've assembled with the help of HPC solutions, thus improving both the speed of the analysis and the quality of the results. A new Fujitsu White Paper now explains how PRIMEFLEX for HPC can be helpful in such scenarios.

OK, here is a task: Think of your favorite car. Have you thought about a Mustang? The latest Audi TT? Alternatively, a Porsche 911? Whichever it was, you know the thrill when you hit the throttle and accelerate, get the most performance out, smell the rubber on the street and gasoline on your hands.

HPC enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic may not enjoy hearing this, but their renowned biannual ranking of the world's most powerful scientific computer systems sometimes suffers from the same key symptom that makes many soap operas so hard to digest: predictability. Once a supercomputer has conquered a spot among the 10 or 20 fastest number crunchers, it usually retains that position for years – much like Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy did in "Dallas." The TOP500's latest edition (no. 49) seems to adhere to the same rule, but eventually provides a little more entertainment value.
