Fujitsu Toughens Up Tablets

Mobile and functional they may be, but robustness isn't exactly a key characteristic of tablet computers. Fujitsu's new STYLISTIC V535, which just debuted at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, is supposed to close that gap.

The STYLISTIC V535 sports a 21.0-cm (8.3-inch) IPS display with WUXGA resolution (1920 x 1200 pixels) made from toughened glass that sits inside a fully-ruggedized frame designed for rough-and-tumble environments such as industrial or retail settings. Thanks to this setup, it'll survive any knocks and even harsher drops from heights up to 1.8 meters (approx. 6 ft.) – nearly twice as much as older designs. In addition, the frame keeps out liquids and dust according to IP65 rating. The STYLISTIC V535 operates in a wider temperature range than regular devices, providing functionality between arctic -10°C through to a sweltering 50°C.

Equipped with a quad-core Intel® Atom™ processor running at 2.4 GHz, 4 GB of memory and up to 128 GB internal storage on an eMMC card, the new tablet easily runs a full-fledged copy of Windows 8.1 plus matching office and business applications. Moreover, it offers enterprise-class connectivity with optional support for 3G and 4G mobile networks, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC, thus enabling applications like contactless authentication and real-time warehousing. For maximum navigation flexibility and accuracy, the V535 relies on both GPS and GLONASS.

To round out the offering, Fujitsu has added numerous high-end hard- and software features not normally found in or available for tablet PCs. These include a dual digitizer with 10-finger touch support that can even be operated with gloves on; built-in ambient light and proximity sensors; an 8MP rear camera with autofocus and flashlight; and support for an external Full HD display. Another welcome extension is the Fujitsu Smart Shell Concept: users may simply slip the base unit into different shells for varying usage scenarios – at the moment, they can choose between a shell with a hex mount option for use in logistics or manufacturing, a 'retail shell' with integrated magstripe or chip/PIN reader, and a SmartCard shell that offers enhanced protection for those working with confidential customer, patient or research data.

The FUJITSU Tablet STYLISTIC V535 is available to order immediately for channel partners in the CEMEA & I and North American areas. Pricing varies according to region, model, and configuration.
