Singapore allows schools to resume Zoom use for home-based learning with additional safeguards in place

ImageAfter the recent reports of privacy breaches while using Zoom - hackers had hijacked the streaming of a lesson - the Singapore Ministry of Education has allowed schools to progressively resume the use of the video-conferencing platform, introducing additional layers of defense.

Singapore schools have been permitted to resume their use of Zoom to facilitate home-based learning, lifting an earlier ban that was established following security breaches involving the video conferencing tool. Teachers will be able to resume use with added controls in place and some features turned off.

After the government previous ban, on late Monday the Ministry of Education said it had put in place enhanced security protocols, including centrally managing default security settings on Zoom and consolidating security settings to a single button so these could be more easily activated.

In addition, once teachers are familiarized with the new security requirements, they will have to submit an acknowledgement of compliance before they are allowed to carry out live lessons on Zoom.

The Singapore’s MOE also stated that the removed features will be re-activated in the future once all the security concerns are solved and users are more acquainted with the added security measures.

On its part, Zoom has acknowledged falling short and has since halted development work on new features until security and privacy issues are resolved.
