Reliability, Security and Efficiency at Their Best: the FUJITSU Desktop ESPRIMO Family (Part 1 of 3)

As a Fujitsu Channel Partner, one of the most frequently asked question you'll hear from your customers is, "Why should I buy desktop computers from Fujitsu?" This article gives an overview of the most relevant arguments that speak for our ESPRIMO product family. In a nutshell, it's a combination of reliability, flexibility/configurability, security, and energy efficiency that puts them ahead of the competition. In part 1 of our three-part article, we focus on reliability and flexibility.

Fujitsu desktop PCs have come a long way since we first introduced our FM-8 model in 1981. Back then, the 8-bit system received much acclaim for its innovative use of dynamic RAM as main memory, which enabled higher densities and thus faster processing than the SRAM cells used in competing models from Commodore and the likes. Today, the FM-8 serves as one of the earliest examples for an evolutionary approach to innovation that turns technical advancements into clear business advantages for both our customers and our channel partners. This approach has shaped our product policy ever since and resulted in a number of characteristics that are essential for each new generation of desktop computers.

World-Class Reliability and Flexibility
Given this long tradition in manufacturing PCs that meet customer and business needs, it is hardly a surprise that Fujitsu products constantly rank among the most reliable as well as the most adaptable devices on the market. Of course there are many reasons why an ICT vendor would receive such positive ratings; but in our case, we think one of the decisive factors is that we pay close attention to details, that is, the components we fit into a desktop case. For example, our competition today often relies on generic mainboards. By contrast, we at Fujitsu still develop and manufacture our own mainboards at our factory in Augsburg, Germany (see Fig. 1 below), because this is the easiest way to come up with material that adheres to our high standards. As a consequence, Fujitsu mainboards are among the most robust you will find in the market – an essential prerequisite for building stable and reliable end-user devices, but not the only one. Rigorous testing of all components and the finished products is at least equally important.

That's precisely why the Augsburg factory not only serves as our European basis for the development, manufacturing, configuration, and staging of PCs, but also as a test lab. Here, we literally put single components as well as the finished systems through their paces: keyboards, for instance, have to undergo massive hammering tests that simulate rough working conditions – and must not show cracks or other damage on the mechanical parts afterwards, to ensure they remain fully functional whenever the going gets tough. Likewise, our displays are subjected to several mandatory tests, among them thermo vision tests (to exclude surface defects or inhomogeneities), system integration tests (to ensure compatibility) and, of course, electrical safety checks. Tests suites for complete systems include vibration and shock tests that show whether they can survive prolonged exposure to tremor, electromagnetic compatibility and interference immunity tests that exclude electrical malfunctions and data loss, noise emission tests that help us build silent devices, and a visit to the climate lab, where we simulate extreme changes in ambient temperature while running various benchmark tests. In short, we do to our ESPRIMO Desktops what no normal user would ever dare to – and products that have survived the various procedures are practically immune to adversarial working conditions. As a result, the ESPRIMO Desktop family delivers outstanding reliability and durability: in the past three years alone, we were able to reduce our already low failure rates by another 24%.

But FUJITSU ESPRIMO desktops not only excel in terms of reliability. They also represent one of the most flexible platforms in the market: currently we offer a wide range of different models addressing individual needs, each of which is available in various configurations – customers are free to choose the processor type, memory modules, HDD or SSD, graphics card and operating system that best fit a particular job or working scenario. Moreover, two thirds of the ESPRIMO models belong to the superior product range and provide features and benefits that users will hardly find elsewhere. For instance, our Zero Noise PCs will work in absolute silence during standard operations – the result of built-in SSDs that also allow for faster access to data and applications. Similarly, long lifecycle products such as the FUJITSU Desktop ESPRIMO D956/LL provide the continuity and availability required for long-term projects; components and systems remain available for 24 months so that they may be deployed in step-by-step fashion and are easy to repair or replace.

Given these characteristics, it's easy to conclude that the ESPRIMO Desktop family provides maximum quality, reliability and flexibility – or as one customer put it, "nearly all benefits of custom-made systems at a much better price."
