NVIDIA Releases PhysX 4.0 SDK

NVIDIA has released the latest version of its physics engine, aimed at providing industrial-grade simulation quality at game simulation performance levels. The move comes shortly after the engine had become open source under the simple 3-Clause BSD license.

At the heart of the PhysX 4.0 SDK are two innovations, the Temporal Gauss-Seidel Solver (TGS) and a reduced coordinate articulations feature. TGS makes machinery, characters, ragdolls and anything else that is jointed or articulated more robust since it dynamically re-computes the constraints at each iteration, based on bodies' relative motion. The reduced coordinate articulations feature makes it possible to simulate joints with realistic actuation while eliminating relative position error. Both new features combined enable simulations with higher gravity, bigger impacts, smaller features and bigger time steps.

Also new are the automatic multi-broad phase function, revisions in stability and better scalability introduced through new filter rules for kinematics and statics. Actor-centric scene queries significantly improve performance for actors with many shapes. The new build system is based on the open-source CMake tool suite.

PhysX is already integrated into some of the most popular game engines, including Unreal Engine, and Unity3D. The BSD licenses referenced above are available for Apple's iOS and macOS platforms, Google's Android ARM branch, various flavors of Linux, and of course Microsoft Windows, NVIDIA's EULA licenses cover Microsoft's XBox One, Sony's Playstation 4, and Nintendo's Switch.
