Over the past four years, tablet computers have redefined the concept of mobile computing: devices like Fujitsu's STYLISTIC family of products make data and applications accessible from almost anywhere and serve up a truly "ubiquitous" experience. Unfortunately, so far this also meant that users had to put up with one standard product design that didn't leave many expansion and customization options. Fujitsu's new Shell Concept now overcomes this limitation.

Much has been told about Fujitsu's vision for a "Human-Centric Intelligent Society," but few examples illustrate the concept as completely as the Intelligent Desk – which is, in essence, a design study of what the average office workplace could look like in the foreseeable future. Developed in a collaborative effort with Germany's leading research organization, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (Fraunhofer Society), it depicts just how immersive the working experience may become, comparable only to top console games such as "The Elder Scrolls" or the "FIFA" series of football (soccer) simulations.

Hardware vendors as well as IT departments may not be fond of the allegation, but it rings true nonetheless: A lot of data centers are run like cold stores at around 20 °C (68 °F). As a result, cooling expenses have exploded – in some organizations, they already account for half of the power consumption and energy costs. However, IT departments don't have to fall victim to this trend: Fujitsu's Cool-safe® Advanced Thermal Design technology solves these problems in bulk.

It's a common belief that high availability or virtualization scenarios are the domain of huge companies with at least a few hundred employees and matching infrastructure. But when you look around, you'll find that car dealers, plumbers, and tax consultants everywhere are just as eager to offer their customers the best service levels as any department store.

Since the late 1990s, whenever you ask storage administrators how they handle new challenges, the answer almost always is: "By deploying bigger systems." Simplistic as it seems, this approach is often the only one that works, because along with more capacity, these systems also provide higher data transfer rates and a broader set of management capabilities. On the downside, this strategy causes storage systems and environments to become oversized and underutilized – hardly something you want in a cost-averse economy with shrinking IT budgets.

With today's economy being almost entirely information-driven, it is no surprise that managers want accurate, up-to-the-minute statistics to base their business decisions upon. Still, many IT departments can't deliver the kind of substantiated data they need due to a lack of resources or capacities. The adequate solution to that problem is to build a data warehouse, i.e. a central repository where relevant information can be stored for further analysis with BI and OLAP applications.

Although Server Based Computing (SBC) is a well-established variety of desktop virtualization, a majority of IT departments has long treated the topic of Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI) with a mix of uncertainty and neglect. But with growing demands for flexible infrastructures, many of them are now questioning that perspective and looking for solutions that provide all the benefits of a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) while avoiding the disadvantages. That's where Fujitsu's VDI Bundles come into play – combined hard- and software packages that make implementing VDI astonishingly easy.

Fujitsu has always been eager to help customers protect their business-critical information and privacy, long before newspapers broke stories about massive online surveillance almost every day. To this end, we have developed or adopted a fair share of technologies and solutions, ranging from fingerprint sensors to TPM chips and from web privacy enhancements to the Advanced Theft Protection suite. As a result, Fujitsu workplace systems are as prominent for their comprehensive security features as they are for outstanding functionality.

Fujitsu has treated its Thin Clients and Smart Zero Clients as separate product lines for several years. But looking at data sheets and positioning cards published in recent weeks, you will find that as of Q4/2013, they all have been regrouped into one single, streamlined Thin Client family. Apart from joining together what belongs together, we also wanted to make it easier for customers and channel partners to find and compare clients for common VDI and Server-based Computing (SBC) scenarios.
