The idea of Artificial Intelligence (AI) – a sapient, if not sentient entity created by humans in their own image – has fascinated people since ancient Egyptian sculptors alleged they were able to breathe life into the sacred statues they carved out of stone. Since then, the concept hasn't lost its attraction, although it didn't always come with positive connotations, in literature and movies at least. Over the past 60 years, however, scientists and engineers have tried to devise more humane forms of AI – devices that may help us solve existential problems instead of creating them. NVIDIA's GTC Europe conference provides us with a perfect platform to demonstrate our most recent advancements in the field.

In part 1 of this blog series, I provided instructions on configuring a Spark cluster environment using Hadoop YARN running on highly-reliable Fujitsu M10/Fujitsu SPARC M12 servers. By taking advantage of enterprise-grade, highly reliable hardware, customers can avoid a Single Point of Failure (SPOF) in a Hadoop environment. In part 2, we provide step-by-step instructions on how to configure a Hadoop Single Node environment and will continue in subsequent blogs.

When I started my career in IT, SPARC/Solaris was the platform of choice for system development, from small-scale systems to mission critical systems. Most open source software (OSS) was also first developed on Solaris and then migrated to other platforms. In recent years the performance and reliability of the Intel Architecture (IA) platform have grown, and most OSS has been developed using IA/Linux, but SPARC/Solaris continues to evolve. Integrated development of OS and hardware create strong advantages for each platform. For example, in Fujitsu M10/Fujitsu SPARC M12, as CPU functions such as SWoC (Software on Chip) are enhanced, extensions to automatically use SWoC functions are implemented in Solaris OS. This results in higher reliability of Fujitsu M10/Fujitsu SPARC M12 hardware to ensure stable operation of the IT system. In addition, many OSS have been optimized for the latest version of Solaris, which makes stable OSS operation possible. Oftentimes, I receive inquiries about the combination of SPARC/Solaris and OSS from customers who understand the advantages of SPARC/Solaris and continue to use it. In this blog, I explore the use of SPARC/Solaris in a wider range of fields.

One of the greatest obstacles for a healthy data center development always was that most companies regarded IT as a "necessary evil." More recently, however, that view has changed considerably – not least because platforms like Fujitsu's PRIMERGY CX400 M4 systems serve as powerful yet cost-effective key enablers that fit into almost any usage scenario.

Since at least 2010, businessmen, politicians and technicians from all over the world have discussed plans for a digital transformation (or "digitalization") of the global economy. The core idea behind these concepts is that in order to boost their productivity and revenues (and, possibly, their home country's GDP), companies must connect and integrate business and IT processes as well as information and production systems as closely as possible. Unfortunately, that sounds much easier than it is, since many enterprises don't operate adequate hardware platforms that would help them to get the job done. Thankfully, Fujitsu's new quad-socket rack server PRIMERGY RX4770 M4 has all the capabilities they need for the powerful backend.

One of the toughest challenges for IT infrastructure providers is to build standard server hardware that truly deserves the name. Still worse, this goal seems to be harder to accomplish today than it was in 2007 or 1997. Fujitsu's freshly released portfolio of fourth-generation PRIMERGY dual- and quad-socket servers, however, proves it can still be done. Case in point: the FUJITSU Server PRIMERGY RX2540 M4.

Ever since we started selling industry-standard servers in the mid-1990s, one key goal of Fujitsu has always been to provide our customers with powerful systems that easily adapt to hundreds, if not thousands of different usage scenarios. The 2017 class of Fujitsu's dual- and quad-socket PRIMERGY rack and scale-out servers not only carries on the same proud tradition, but offers major improvements regarding this kind of versatility – not least because the new models are based on the new Intel® Xeon® Processor Scalable family.

Back in April, a so-called Product Change Notification from Intel suddenly appeared online, providing CIOs and IT departments with a first glimpse at the naming conventions and tech specs of the company's upcoming "Purley" line of server processors. Essentially a 'port' of the Skylake microarchitecture to the Xeon brand, it is intended to serve as the "foundation for secure, agile, multi-cloud data centers" and gives users a wider range of "workload-optimized" performance options to choose from. Starting in July, the Purley platform – officially dubbed the Intel® Xeon® Processor Scalable family – will appear in our new, fourth generation of dual- and quad-socket PRIMERGY servers as well as the PRIMEQUEST 3800B.
